Fall arts preview visual arts

So what do all of the visual arts venues in the Miami Valley have in common? They’re all free of charge, great news in uncertain economic times. With the exception of a few special exhibits at the Dayton Art Institute, there’s no admission fee for any of the calendar events we’ve listed below.

There are lots of good reasons to plan a visit to a local gallery this year:

• College and community galleries offer everything from faculty and student art shows to touring exhibits and art competitions. The Dayton Area Works on Paper show at Rosewood Gallery in Kettering, for example, gives viewers a peek into the creative community within a 45-mile radius of Dayton.

• Subject matter of the art ranges widely. To mark the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of the Species,” Wright State University’s Stein Galleries will present “Reflections on Darwin” with artists exploring the ideas behind evolution and its impact on today’s society.

• Art comes in every form. At Sinclair Community College Galleries, Juan-Si Gonzalez will blend objects, photos and video into a “social sculpture” based on interviews conducted with students, their friends and family.
