Dayton and Southwest Ohio were well represented with nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards.
But none of the nominees ended up receiving the coveted award honoring work on the big screen and small screen.
"Carol," the 1950s romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, led the nominations for the Golden Globes. Nominations included Best Motion Picture Drama (the award went to "The Revenant"). Mara and Blanchett were each nominated for best actress in a drama film (the award went to Brie Larson for "Room"). Director Todd Haynes was nominated in the Best Director — Motion Picture category (the award went to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "The Revenant". Composer Carter Burwell was nominated for Best Original Score for his work on "Carol" (that award went to "The Hateful Eight").
"Carol" was filmed regionally and includes the work of and appearances by local residents as extras. Southwestern Ohio shooting locations included areas of Hamilton, Lebanon and Cincinnati, which were scouted by the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission. The film is now showing locally at the Neon Movies in Dayton.
Dayton-raised star Rob Lowe earned a nomination for best actor in a television comedy series for his role on FOX's "The Grinder." The award went to Gael Garcia Bernal for "Mozart in the Jungle."
Lowe, who largely grew up around the Dayton, began his acting career in local television and theater. He recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His dad, Charles “Chuck” Lowe, is a Dayton-area attorney.
Lowe has previously earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his role on "The West Wing." He has received Screen Actors Guild awards as part of the ensemble cast for "The West Wing." This year, Lowe also earned a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite Actor in a New TV Series for his work on "The Grinder."
Lowe also recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
