Nasty Bingo has maintained a somewhat fluid lineup since its inception in 2006. Rather than being a creative inconvenience, it has opened up new possibilities for the local folkadelic band, celebrating the release of a new album at the “Old” Yellow Cab Bldg. in Dayton on Saturday, Jan. 23.

Brian “Red” Baumgardner (guitar, banjo), Matt Byanski (vocals, harmonica, kazoo, shakers), Steve Phelps (drums, percussion, ukulele, guitar, vocals,) and Ron White (bass, vocals) recently discussed the new album and Nasty Bingo’s fluctuating lineups.

THE MUSIC

Baumgardner: "We recorded the songs ourselves in the basement and then gave them to Tim Berger, who did the final mix and master on it. We started recording at my house last November and had everything recorded and the rough mix done by the end of the summer. Then we passed it off to Tim and he made sense of everything."

Byanski: "There were a few things we couldn't control and Tim was able to figure that part out. He made the drums and bass fit perfectly together and got the EQ and everything in the mix correctly. It was a lot of fine tuning to dial that in, so I'm sure he spent some time on it."

Baumgardner: "I don't know how to do that."

Byanski: "Red kind of gets it. He did an OK job, but Tim is the master."

THE PLAYERS

Baumgardner: "We've had lots of lineup changes."

Phelps: "It's always a matter of finding the right players. The best players aren't necessarily the right fit. Even if you've got a good unit that gels, are you going to stay together long enough to actually accomplish something? We keep thinking we need a fifth or sixth full-time member, but we've been really lucky having people sit in."

Baumgardner: "We've got different guests for the release show like Paige Beller, Steve Makofka, Sharon Lane, Scott Loy and Trey Stone."

Byanski: "Doing 'The Last Waltz' has been a great setup for us. We've met all these different people. We've done shows with almost half the people from that show now. It's cool to tap into that talented community."

Phelps: "As long as our core is solid, we can keep bringing different people in so you never know what you're going to get at a Nasty Bingo show. You know you'll get entertained but you don't know exactly how or by whom."

Byanski: "It's a blessing we haven't found that extra member because we get to play with all these different people. It's a journey and that's why I do it."
