Ruckus Roboticus to celebrate CD release at Peach’s

Dance-oriented ‘Chicks’ a sign of things to come

Dayton doesn’t have a huge international DJ scene, but local turntablist Dan “Ruckus Roboticus” Haug is making his name known beyond the United States. As part of the London, England,-based Solid Steel Radio team, an offshoot of the Ninja Tunes label, he contributes monthly mixes to the Internet radio program. This exposure also led to his second trip to London in March.

“It was a great experience,” Haug said. “The shows were great crowds, but the lesson I learned is that London seems like a magical place, but it’s really a lot like here. A lot of the people are just there to party and they don’t really care who is playing. There were a couple of shows where the crowd was just really into it. The people I really had to impress were the other DJs and they were really into it.”

This month Haug released new digital EP, “Chicks.” Like his mind-blowing debut LP, “Playing with Scratches” (2008), the lead track samples retro sounds, often but not exclusively from the ’50s and ’60s, and reconfigures them into totally modern dance music.

“I’m a sucker for retro and vintage, but with that song I did want to jazz it up and bring it into a contemporary aesthetic,” he said. “It’s a sign of things to come from me. I think my newer projects will be more dance-oriented.”

The EP includes a radio edit of “Chicks,” plus individual remixes by Frankie J, Hot Mess and DJ Wood.

“I had a long list of potential remixers and I actually contacted them myself,” Haug said. “I was actually happy with the ones I got.”

The EP also features three new dance floor-ready tracks.

“Those are definitely unauthorized and kind of obvious songs,’ he said. “I feel like this EP is about getting through to the DJs and the dance floors, so I kind of did my take on some of my favorite dance tracks.”

Ruckus Roboticus celebrates the local release of “Chicks” at Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs on Saturday, July 17.

“I’ll be doing my one-man-band performance, including a couple of songs from the EP,” Haug said. “Skratchmatic will be performing and they’re like a turntable jam band. It’s all turntables, but they’re still a band. The third act is Ill Poetic. He’s a rapper from Cincinnati and I really like his stuff so I’m excited about that.”
