UPDATE: Neither Tony Todd from “Candyman;” Walter Koenig from “Star Trek; ” Adrian Paul from the “Highlander: the Series;” nor David Warner from “Penny Dreadful,” “The Omen,” and “Tron” will appear as previously reported at Epic-Con Ohio: Geek Fest Convention and Custom Auto Show this weekend at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
Organizers cited conflicting professional obligations and other overseen developments as reasons.
It ain’t always easy being geeky.
But self-proclaimed lifelong geek Sheri Yarbrough, co-owner of Dayton-based JackaByte Multimedia with her husband Kevin, said it can be fun.
“It lets you escape reality for a little bit,” Yarbrough said. “It allows me to get rid of a lot of stress and have fun and laugh.”
Yarbrough and her family will hold the second annual Epic-Con Ohio: Geek Fest Convention and Custom Auto Show from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 1043 S. Main St. in Dayton.
There will be a welcome party Friday (18 and older) beginning at 10 p.m. and an after-party starting at 10 p.m. Saturday.
General admission is $20 Friday and $25 a day Saturday and Sunday. A weekend pass is $55.
Yarbrough said $5 for each ticket sale will be donated to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation to raise awareness for this rare lung disorder. A Yarbrough family relative died of a pulmonary disorder, and Sheri Yarbrough has had a lung disorder since childhood
Organizers anticipate 3,000 to 5,000 geeks from all areas of the geek universe to attend.
Epic Con includes a custom car show, comics, contests, competitions, cosplay, live action role playing, FX artists, gaming, Rock Star Pro Wresting, celebrity appearances, game-themed food, fan groups, a nerdoff and the screenings.
Yarbrough, a Patterson High School graduate, said nerds are considered super intellectical, but a geek can be anyone who “geeks” out on a particular topic.
“Geeks are a little different,” she said.
Saturday’s highlight includes a never before pre-release screening of the Clive Baker horror film “Nightbreed” and a question-and-answer session with cast members, including lead actor Craig Sheffer.
Other celebrity guests include A. Michael Baldwin from “Phantasm;” Lori Petty from “Point Break” and “Tank Girl” and pro wrestling legends Diamond Dallas Page and Jake “The Snake” Roberts.
Epic-Con Ohio: musical performers include The Rough Customers, Duderus, NightBeast, Dethlehem, Red Hot Rebellion, Sky Blew, Team Void and The Skeletones
“This is something that was always a passion of mine and my husband’s,” said Yarbrough, a fan of geekdom that ranges from custom cars, live action role playing and anime. “Now our children (20-year-old twins Nadia and Tiana and 17-year-old son Darion) love it. We wanted to bring something to Dayton that they didn’t have.”
