71 bike racks to be donated for public use

It appears that the effort to make bike parking more accessible in the Gem City is only going to continue.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley will dedicate 71 bike racks, provided by Creating Healthy Communities Program of Public Health -Dayton & Montgomery County, to the City of Dayton for public use on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. across from The Wright Dunbar Interpretive Center, 16 South Williams Street, Dayton, according to Laura Estandia, executive director of Bike Miami Valley.

Funding for the racks came from a $10,000 grant from Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County’s Creating Healthy Communities Program.

Volunteers at Bike Miami Valley and UpDayton were awarded the funding for a collaborative UpDayton Summit project that focused on furthering the city's growing active lifestyle reputation through biking amenities.

“I am proud of the work of our partners at Bike Miami Valley, Public Health and UpDayton for working collaboratively to serve the citizens of Dayton,” Whaley said. “This is a great example of citizens engaging in their community and being catalysts for a healthier Dayton.”

Project leaders Aaron Glett and Laura Estandia submitted the idea for more bike racks on Brown Street at the UpDayton Summit in spring of 2015.

“The project idea came from identifying a need for more public bike parking in our community as we continue grow Dayton as a Bicycle Friendly Community,” Estandia said. “We started with a goal of having more visible bike racks on Brown Street which has bike lanes, but hardly any bike parking that stands out to a bike customer. We are grateful that the Creating Health Communities Program was able to help us serve even more neighborhoods.”

The green hoop style racks are being installed throughout many Dayton neighborhoods including the Fairgrounds Neighborhood, Wright Dunbar, Old North Dayton and others.

Racks are currently being installed by City of Dayton’s Public Works this fall.
