The Christian Life Center is organizing ways to help the community through its LoveDayton event this weekend.

A yearly event to do good work in Dayton, the church has chosen to focus its efforts this year on tornado relief. More than 700 volunteers are expected throughout the weekend, and anyone can help.

“This event is largely rooted in clean-up efforts,” said organizer Shana Lloyd. “Second, it’s a way to show love to the community.”

About 60 volunteers gathered at the Christian Life Center in Vandalia on Friday to assemble care packages for people affected by tornado damage. 400 packages of cleaning supplies and 400 packages of food were made for distribution on Saturday by nearly 800 volunteers according to church member Donna LaChance. The work started Friday morning, with a second wave on Saturday, June 8.

Saturday, several relief projects are scheduled throughout the community, and help from all ages is welcome, according to organizers.

Volunteers should meet at the Christian Life Center sanctuary promptly at 9 a.m. There, they will be given instructions on what projects they will be participating in. Clean-up, clear outs and sending care items are just a few of the projects planned. Projects are expected to run until 1 or 2 p.m., so keep your schedule flexible if you plan to attend, organizers urge volunteers.

LoveDayton T-shirts will be available in the lobby for anyone who may not have one.

If you’re looking for more heavy lifting, the church also has partnered with Team Rubicon to handle heavy duty jobs. Those who wish to join this effort should meet at the CLC at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers for this need to be at least 18, and should wear work pants/jeans and heavy duty work boots.

Whether you are able to help with LoveDayton or any other relief project, the work being done is bringing people together for a great cause.

“This has been amazing seeing how many people are collaborating,” Lloyd said.
