Award-winning gospel singer Sandi Patty announced last year she was retiring from the road at the conclusion of her Forever Grateful farewell tour, which stops for a sold-out show at First Baptist Church of Kettering in Beavercreek on Saturday, Nov. 5. Patty recently answered some questions from her home in Oklahoma City and it’s clear she’s not going to stop working.

Q: You announced your farewell tour nearly a year ago. Have you reconsidered that decision?

A: “I’m so glad I’m doing this tour and I’m so glad we’ll wind this part down in March of next year. I’ve enjoyed it so much and I’m really thankful because traveling and touring is a whole lot different when you’re not 30 years old. My family is out with me and we have the most amazing band and guest artists so I’m loving it.”

Q: You’re also using this tour to introduce your kids as performers. What’s that been like?

A: “It’s very exciting to introduce them to a whole new audience. A couple of the kids are working on a project this year and they’ll be traveling on their own next year. We also have a group called Veritas and it’s like five Josh Grobans so they’re fabulous. I’m mentoring some of the new artists and some of them just happen to be my kids.”

Q: What are your plans after you step away from heavy touring?

A: “I’m hoping to do more teaching. I’ve always wanted to teach so I’m looking forward to that part of it. My husband and I have eight kids between us and we have three grandkids. There will probably be a lot more grandkids coming along so we’re looking forward to that. We laughed because I won’t be touring but we’ll probably be on the road more just going to visit our grandkids.”

Q: What appeals to you about teaching?

A: “With college kids and the generation that’s coming behind, there’s an energy that comes with that age and I enjoy giving them some thoughts from this side of life. I enjoy passing down to the next generation how to relate to an audience, the importance of taking care of your voice and other things I learned over the years.”
