Funkalicious! Funk and food combine forces for party and soul food dinner

One of Dayton’s gems plans to get funky during an all-white party complete with soul food.

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s Soulfully  Funkalicious: All-White Party is set for 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth Street in downtown Dayton.

"We were very heart-struck when we heard the museum was closing, we want to remind people that funk is part of our history, part of our heritage," Jay L. Peterson, DCDC's director of marketing and special events, said. "Let's celebrate funk and let's really bring it back to mind."

White clothing is preferred from the event, which will feature a soul food buffet.

DCDC’s dancers will take the floor as the Dayton Funk All-Stars Band plays funk music from in the 1970s and 1980s.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU

General admission is $80.

The price includes entertainment and a soul food buffet featuring  watermelon and cucumber salad with mint and feta cheese; fried catfish; fried chicken; baked chicken; macaroni and cheese; collard greens; cornbread and rolls;  sweet potato pie and peach cobbler.

VIP admission includes the above, a beverage of your choice and a photo opportunity with the DCDC dancers.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FUNK MUSEUM?

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support The Funk Hall of Fame and Exhibition Center.

The Funk Center opened at 113 E. Third St. in downtown Dayton’s Fire Blocks District in December 2017 and celebrated its grand opening early in 2018.

It closed in March as supporters plan for a new location.

Funk music put Dayton on the map as the Land of the Funk in the 1970s and '80s thanks to groups Including the Ohio Players, Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame, Zapp, Faze-O, Heatwave, Sun, Slave and Lakeside.

DCDC’s party is one of several funk related events planned in the coming weeks.

🎤The Grammy Award-winner Keith Harrison who performed as part of Faze-O, Dazz Band and Heatwave will play at the Levitt Pavilion at Dave Hall Plaza in downtown Dayton at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

The free concert follows a festival celebrating The Dayton Sister Cities Committee’s 50th anniversary with Oiso, Japan.

🎤The Dayton Funk Festival, a free event, is planned for 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11, at Levitt Pavilion at Dave Hall Plaza, 134 S. Main St. in downtown Dayton.

🎤 Four of the biggest acts to emerge from the Gem City will be featured in 937-Live: Hometown Legends for Relief hosted by Bootsy Collins and Peppermint Patty Collins.

The show is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Rose Music Center, 6800 Executive Blvd., Huber Heights.

The lineup includes Ohio PlayersZapp, The Original Lakeside and Steve Arrington.
