Ickey Woods shuffling into Fifth Street Brewpub to bartend

Guest bartending to benefit asthma research and awareness

You might know him as a pitchman, former Cincinnati Bengals and the man who brought the world the Ickey Shuffle touchdown dance.

But Elbert “Ickey” Woods says that is just part of his story.

“I am a good father for my child and good man in general. I want to make a difference in life,” Wood told us by phone. ” I went through the tragedy of losing a child. It is something that no parents should go through.”

Woods will pour beer and sell merchandise at Fifth Street Brewpub, 1600 E. Fifth St, starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 21.

Donations and a portion of the tips collected will benefit the Jovante Woods Foundation as part of the brewpub's guest bartender program.

Jovante Woods - the fifth of six children - died Aug. 14, 2010 as the result of a severe asthma attack. His was just 16.

His family established the foundation to promote asthma awareness and research, organ donation and education.

Ickey Woods said the charity has raised more than $100,000 since is inception for asthma. That is in addition to $30,000 for a college scholarship.

Woods said the money raised here will be donated to the Dayton Children's Hospital for asthma.

Archer Tavern will hold a golf outing for the charity on May 9.

Woods said he strives to help prevent other tragedies.

"A lot of people don't know about the seriousness and severity of asthma. It kills 11 people a day," he said. "We not only want to raise money for research, we want to spread awareness."
