What started out as a way for a large area church to get all of its members at one service has turned into a music festival.

“We have a large congregation, from 1,200 to 1,500, but our biggest venue is only 450 seats,” said Rick Ball, director of worship at Faith Community United Methodist Church in West Chester Twp. “We have five worship services every Sunday morning at our Cox Road church and one in Mason (at Water’s Edge United Methodist Church). We wanted to do something to get everyone together for a last-ditch effort to keep summer around a little bit longer.”

So after looking around for a bigger space, Ball and his crew ended up striking a deal with Kings Island to hold the service at Timberwolf Amphitheatre, and then it became a chance to make the event something for the entire community.

Faith Day will include performances by contemporary Christian music mainstay NewSong, along with Revive, an up-and-coming band from Australia, and Alisa Childers from the band ZOEGirl.

“NewSong has been around doing worship concerts for over 30 years,” Ball said. “They appeal to a very wide audience, from teenagers to older adults and do everything from little acoustic ditties to full-blown shows, so we thought they would be good to have something everyone could connect with.”

According to the band’s Web site, Revive was discovered by Third Day frontman Mac Powell during a tour of Australia. Powell kept in touch with the band after he returned to the U.S. and encouraged them to move to Atlanta, where Powell produced their debut CD for Essential Records.

After spending seven years with pop-influenced ZOEgirl, Childers recently decided to set out on her own to pursue a more personal, singer/songwriter style of music.

In an unusual move for Kings Island, people who don’t want to come to the park can purchase tickets for the concert only.
