Artwork at Sinclair Community College is a glimpse into the personal stories of the artists who created them.

The exhibition is held in conjunction with the upcoming REACH Across Dayton 2020 conference, a cultural exchange wrapped up in a day of art, discussion and music on Feb. 28.

“It’s an excellent example of painting with diverse examples of what to do with painting,” said Pat McClelland, the gallery coordinator for Sinclair. “The many different styles enhance one another.”

The exhibition, curated by Kay Koeninger, a professor of art at Sinclair, combines diversity with subtle storytelling, McClelland said.

“It’s not blatant narrative storytelling, but for each artist, within their work there is their own personal story.”

Among the paintings by artist Morris Howard are images of his mother and grandfather and the view from Jean Koeller’s studio windows are the subject of her landscapes.

McClelland said Ann Kim’s Asian background influences her artwork, “blended with bits from her cultural background” and the “dynamic dream-like quality” of the colorful paintings by Cedrick Cox have a narrative quality.

The exhibition will be on view in the Triangle Gallery, located in building 13 on the Sinclair campus, through Feb. 28.
