Walk-on guard to return as fifth-year senior in 2017-18

Senior Night for the Dayton Flyers won’t include one of the team’s six seniors.

UD announced Thursday walk-on Joey Gruden will return to the team next year. It will be his fifth year at the University of Dayton and his fourth season with the team.

Gruden has appeared in 17 games in the last three seasons and six this season. He is the first walk-on off the bench in the final minutes.

Gruden’s dad, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, visited him on campus last weekend.

Dayton will honor its four senior starters — Charles Cooke, Kyle Davis, Kendall Pollard and Scoochie Smith — as well as senior walk-on Jeremiah Bonsu prior to an 8 p.m. Wednesday game against Virginia Commonwealth at UD Arena.
