Beavercreek woman creates storybook soap for Dayton Children’s

“I want to support and change the community one bar at a time,” business owner says.

Katie Hall has a story to tell, and it smells like a dream.

The owner of Fox in Socks Soapery, a milk and honey-based handcrafted soap business, worked with artist Valerie Vargas to create a collection of Storybook Soaps.

The idea started when a representative from the hospital had asked Hall if she would add a collection jar on her counter.

“I wanted to have a bigger give than that,” she said. “The wheels started turning.”

The whimsical soap packaging pays homage to four classic children’s books: “Winnie the Pooh,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Treasure Island” and “James and the Giant Peach.”

Scents include oatmeal and sweet honey, lilac and coconut and peach.

The soap set retails for $35 at the recently opened Fox in Socks booth in  2nd Street Market, 1121 E. 3rd Street, The Dayton Children's gift shop, 1 Children's Plaza in Dayton, and the Little Exchange, Fine Gifts, 45 Park Ave., Oakwood.

Hall, a graduate of Miami Valley Career Technology Center and Sinclair Community College where she studied biotechnology, launched her business in 2016 and quit her job at a blood and tissue bank.

The Beavercreek resident says she takes pride in using local suppliers like Marco paper.

Irvin Honey provides the honey used for the soaps. Blairquiest Specialty Meats supplies the  Omega-3 enriched raw milk.

"He's the one who started my passion to (acquire) my ingredients locally," Hall said of Blairquiest co-owner Tim Blair. "He said he thought his milk would make a really amazing soap."

It is important that small businesses support small businesses, she said.

When you become a small business owner, you start making those connections with other small businesses. I think our business community is very small and tight knit,” she said.

Hall wants to use her business to make a difference in the world.
