DIY for cheap: Clothespin planter

Clothespins are easy-to-use, inexpensive and great for a variety of DIY projects. A few weeks ago, I showed you how to create a red, white and blue wreath using clothespins and had a few leftover so I thought I would show you yet another great way to use clothespins in your home. Today, we are going to make a small planter. Pair of few of these in the center of your coffee table or across your mantle for a fun and different take on a normal flower pot.

Items I purchased:

  • White acrylic paint – 79 cents at Meijer
  • Red acrylic paint – 79 cents at Meijer

Items I already had:

  • Clothespins
  • Paintbrush
  • Large tuna cans
  • Small house plant

Directions:

1. Rinse out your empty cans and thoroughly clean them. Remove all labels from the outside as well. Let dry completely.

2. Taking your clothespins, paint 12 of them white and the other 12 red. Make sure to get into all the small spaces so no wood is showing.

3. Apply a second coat of paint to all of the clothespins. Let dry completely.

4. Begin to clip your clothespins around your can. Clipping as close to the bottom as you can go and alternate between the white and red.

5. Continue clipping until you have almost gone completely around the can.

6. With just a few spaces left, add your houseplant to the inside of the can. You will want it sitting in another container so it is better contained. These pots are merely for decoration and not for actual planting.

7. Once your plant is nestled inside your can, close the gap up with the remaining clothespins.

Tip: If you want an even easier way to do this project, omit the painting steps. Using just the natural wood coloring of the clothespins also makes a great planter that is versatile and can go in any room.
