DIY under $10: frame tray is pretty and functional

Nowadays, trays aren’t just used to serve drinks. Trays are used all the time as decorative pieces to adorn coffee or end tables. However, high-end trays can cost an arm and a leg at some stores. This week, we are going to make our own and it will only cost us $9.75 to do.

You will need

Purchased:

• Wooden Frame - $5.50 at a local thrift store

• Two cabinet door pulls - $1.39 each at Home Depot

• Three 12x12 pieces of scrapbook paper - 49 cents each at Michaels Arts and Crafts

Items I already had around the house:

• Drill

• White acrylic paint

• Mod Podge

• Painter’s tape

• Foam brush

• Measuring tape

• Screwdriver

Directions

Tip: If you are planning to use this as a serving tray, then make sure and find a heavy duty frame that can withstand the weight of beverages.

1. Clean your frame and remove all tags from the surface. If possible, remove the backing and glass from your frame. For my frame, the glass didn’t come out, so I had to use painter’s tape to ensure to paint got onto the glass.

2. Use your acrylic paint and apply two coats of paint onto the frame. Let dry completely.

3. Seal in your paint by applying a coat of Mod Podge to your frame.

4. Find the center portion on each short end of your frame. Measure your cabinet pulls and figure out where you will need to drill your holes so that the each pull is centered on the short side of the frame.

5. Once you have measured, drill your holes so that the handles are secured within the frame. Make sure that you do not place the pulls to close to the inside edge because they may interfere with your glass.

6. Once your holes are drilled, screw your pulls into place using the screws that come with each pull. Make sure they are tightly in place, but do not screw them in so far that the wood begins to crack.

7. Place your glass back inside the frame.

8. Layer your scrapbook paper so that it fits nicely within your frame and covers the entire glass portion.

9. Place the backing back on your frame and you are ready to serve up some drinks or add a little decorative flair to your home.
