7 most interesting facts about Sriracha hot sauce

White Castle is jumping into the Sriracha fire.

With the introduction of its Sriracha Chicken sandwiches, the Columbus-based chain is the latest to incorporate the spicy chili garlic sauce into its menu.

The Sriracha Chicken Slider, $1.38, is seasoned with Sriracha and comes topped with a chipotle mayo and served on White Castle’s signature bun.

The Ultimate Sriracha Chicken Slider, $1.49, is topped with jalapeno cheese and jalapeno crisps.

Both will be sold for a limited time only.

Now that we have you all hot and bothered, here are some fun facts about ever popular fire engine red colored hot sauce:

1) It is pronounced "sir-rotch-ah" and named after Sri Racha, Thailand. The coastal town is southeast of Bangkok, the country's capital.

2) A dispute between Sriracha owner Huy Fong Foods and Irwindale, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles, caused hot sauce lovers everywhere to panic. The city filed a lawsuit last year and threatened to declare the Sriracha factory a public nuisance due to odor issues.

Cooler heads prevailed.

The city dismissed the lawsuit last month after the company agreed to address odor concerns.

3) Many fans call Sriracha "rooster sauce" and there's a reason for the bird on the bottle. Huy Fong Foods owner David Tran's Chinese zodiac sign is a rooster.

4) Tran, a Vietnam immigrant, started his business in a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles in 1980, according to the New York Times. Huy Fong is named after the ship that carried Tran to the United States.

5) The company's Sriracha is just one sriracha on the market. Louisiana-based Hot Sauce company Tabasco introduced its own sriracha Thai chili sauce in May. The 15-ounce bottle is sold at the company's Avery Island, La., factory and its online store. The new local company HouseMade bills itself as Dayton's Orginial Sriracha.

6) Known for its green cap, Sriracha is made of simple stuff. The condiment is made of red jalapeno chili peppers, garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt. Research say the capsaicin in chilli can speed up metabolism.

7) Bon Appetit magazine named sriracha "Ingredient of the Year" in 2010 and created Sriracha Week in 2013. The week was celebrated again the first week of May with a ton of Sriracha and hot sauce content on Bon Appetit's website.
