Although some participants have gardening knowledge it isn’t necessary. Greene County Master Gardener Carol Atzbach said that a Greene County Master Gardener can be matched with any group or participant for advice on how to choose plants as well as how to maintain their space.
Adoptees will be responsible for preparing their bed or pots, by removing debris and old plant material. They will also provide plants and be responsible for their maintenance such as weeding, replacing dead plants and removing trash.
The city will provide mulch, signs recognizing adoptees and will also water on a regular schedule. However, Atzbach said that pots will often need more frequent watering as they will dry out fairly quickly in the hotter summer months.
The beds will be cleaned and prepped on Volunteer Day on May 10. Those wanting to participate in Volunteer Day should arrive at city hall 101 N. Detroit St. at 9 a.m. with their own gardening tools.
Volunteers will help prepare the downtown flower pots and flower beds for flowers and lay down mulch in the flower beds. Depending on the number of volunteers, there will also be projects at the city’s parks, including Shawnee Park and Xenia Station.
To reserve your adopted flower bed or pot contact Carol Atzbach, at 937-374-1202 as soon as possible. The application for adoption will be posted on the city’s website: www.ci.xenia.oh.us/.
