“A lot of the women who come in to our domestic violence shelter are coming from a violent situation and don’t have time to gather their belongings and so they show up with hardly anything,” says Sarah Wiseman, volunteer and donations coordinator. Volunteers sort and arrange the clothing and some also help clients shop.
The clients are either residents of one of the YWCA’s two homeless shelters for single women (“Women in Need” and “Safe Haven”) or they are staying at the only domestic violence shelter in Montgomery County. Last year, the three shelters served 375 women and 230 children.
“It’s hard to believe the YWCA Dayton has been tending to the needs of women and children for 140 years,” says Donna Sizemore, director of development. “Lots of changes have taken place but our mission remains dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.”
“Hope’s Closet” accepts women’s and children’s gently used clothing, and is especially in need of women’s plus size clothing and maternity clothing.
Other ongoing needs include:
Children’s socks and underwear
Accessories such as purses, handbags, wallets
Shoes for women and children, especially gym shoes for the kids and both gym and dress shoes for women.
Jewelry
At the end of September, the shop will also be in need of winter items.
Donations can be dropped off seven days a week, 24-hours a day at the main YWCA building, 141 W. Third St. in downtown Dayton.
You’re asked to come through the main entrance that faces Third Street where a guard at the front desk will receive your donation. Fill out the orange donation card that serves as your receipt.
