How to save money on gym memberships

Always work out at a gym before committing to a membership.

Working out is something everyone should do to stay physically and even mentally fit, but with all the options out there, sifting through gym memberships can seem like a daunting task.

Before you sign up for a gym, here are some tips to make sure you find your right fit and save the most money.

Shop around first

Before you sign up for a gym, you need to do your research. Look at a variety of gyms within your price point and decide which one works for you.

“Find a gym that you will actually use. One that has convenient operating hours, is close to your home and work, that promises to help you achieve your personal fitness goals and provides online support and education,” said Mark Daly, national media director for Anytime Fitness. Before you start your search, figure out your budget and write down features you are looking for in a gym. This will help you narrow down your search and find your perfect fit.

Take advantage

of free trials

You can never know for sure if a gym works for you unless you get in there and use the facility. Many gyms offer free trial memberships to interested parties to ensure the gym is a good fit for the person. “Most reputable fitness centers will let you try the facility a few times before you join,” said Jessi Graham, director of marketing and communications for the YMCA of Greater Dayton. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few gyms, ask about trial membership opportunities and use the facility at different times of day to see how it works with you. Does the locker room, staff, equipment and classes meet what you are looking for?

Negotiate your membership price

Many gym’s membership prices are not set in stone.

They will be willing to work with clients to ensure that the monthly rate works for everyone.

In addition, many places offer discounts if you commit to a longer membership, such as a three, six, nine or even 12 months. “Although we have standard monthly rates, we offer reduced rates for those who make commitments to join for three, six or 12 months,” said Mitchell Lyons of Centerville CrossFit. “The longer the commitment, the greater the discount. Savings can reach 30 percent off for those who enroll for a year.”

Look for alternate discounts

Are you in the military, law enforcement, a teacher or a AAA member? Many gyms have discounts for certain professions or organizations. Typically, these are not advertised discounts and if you don’t ask, you won’t be able to cash in. Make sure and ask your gym what offers are available. “Many Anytime Fitness clubs offer ‘Hero Discounts’ for police officers, firefighters and first-responders,” said Daly. “Some Anytime Fitness clubs offer similar discounts for doctors, nurses and teachers. It won’t hurt to ask.”

Refer a friend

Once you decide on a gym, don’t think your discounts stop there. If you are truly happy with your gym, refer your friends and family to join. Many gyms will offer discounts such as a month free membership for you for each friend you refer that successfully joins. Ask to see if your gym offers a referral program for members.

Use your membership

You find the perfect gym. You’re happy with everything it offers. However, if you don’t use your gym, then you are throwing money right out the window. One of the key benefits to a gym membership is having a community of people to support you on your road to health. Take advantage of this and hold yourself accountable. “You are more likely to stick to a fitness routine or program if you enjoy yourself and have the encouragement of others,” Graham said. You have to be your own motivation, but a ‘fitness family’ can go a long way in helping you.”
