Arkansas driver on top of the World 100 at Eldora

ROSSBURG — With its high-banked turns and ruthless concrete walls, Eldora Speedway has taken its toll on both cars and drivers through the years.

But on Saturday, Arkansas’ Billy Moyer turned Eldora in this own little “Dream World.”

Moyer, 52, captured his record-extending sixth World 100 title — and capped his second career World 100 and Dirt Late Model Dream sweep (also doing it in 1998) — by slicing through the field from his starting spot of 23rd.

The Dream win in June and World victory Saturday, both 100-lappers, earned him $143,000.

“It’s everything. This place, the Dream and the World 100 ... It’s the Daytona 500 of the dirt,” said Moyer, “I won 21 (features) this year in the No. 21 car. ... We just had fun doing it.”

Well, for the most part.

On Friday, Moyer qualified 48th out of 134 cars after the two-lap time trial session. On Saturday, he earned a spot in the World by taking the fourth and final qualifying spot in his heat.

It took Moyer 33 laps to race into the top five. He overtook leader Dale McDowell on lap 66.

With 10 laps remaining, Moyer, McDowell and Scott Bloomquist were all racing on the same backstretch, but Moyer had too much for both as he used the low line around the bottom of Eldora’s half-mile track.

“The way the weekend started out I never thought it was going to happen,” Moyer said. “When you’re backed up against the wall, so to speak, you throw some different things at the car that I might not have done if I started in the second or third row.

“Way early in the race I knew we were coming up through there. Dale was exceptionally good for the first 20 or 30 laps and we were on the same line. ... I thought he was better than me at that point and he was the winner. I thought if we got a top five I was going to be happy.”

Bloomquist, McDowell, Don O’Neil and Jimmy Owens rounded out the top five.

Defending World 100 champ Bart Hartman led the first 41 laps after setting a torrid pace, but surrendered the lead after mechanical problems forced him to the pits

Also during the World 100 weekend, Tennessee’s April Farmer scored a victory in the 15-lap non-qualifier consolation race on Friday to become the first female driver to win a late model race at Eldora.
