The students were no less ornery, but there was a feeling somewhere between respect and fear for what would happen to them if they did not do their best.
Today, the media and friends are the main influences in f Re “‘Superman’ re-energizes school debate,” Oct. 20: I am looking forward to seeing the movie “Waiting for Superman” when it comes to Dayton.
You say, “It shows the barriers confronting” . . . “kids searching for a good public school.” Stressed is the relevancy to Dayton Public Schools and the “decade of hard work toward reform” which “yielded positive, if still unsatisfying, change.”
Missing is any mention of family motivation and support structures. Even the best schools and teachers have a difficult time producing results if the home setting is dysfunctional and parental support is lacking. I’m eager to see if “Superman” emphasizes this and gives ideas about how to overcome this shortcoming in a public school setting.
