Grapefruit poses grave risk to some

The June 4th Life section “Tip of the Day” says, “To lose weight without trying, consume lots of artichoke, lemon water and red grapefruit.” Grapefruit juice may provide many nutrients, but the chemicals in grapefruit juice and grapefruit pulp interfere with the enzymes that break down various drugs in the digestive system.

This includes certain calcium channel blockers and cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Please be aware that grapefruit can cause serious side effects. I was one of those individuals who ended up in the hospital because my “grapefruit diet” had put me in great peril because I was taking cholesterol medication.

Readers can check on the Internet under various reliable sources, i.e., MayoClinic.com, and get further information regarding this health risk. Until you find out if it can affect you, lay off this fruit.
