SPARTA, Ky. — Tickets sales moved at a brisk pace both online and at the Kentucky Speedway main ticket offices in Ft. Mitchell and Sparta, Ky. on Tuesday as individual tickets for the track’s inaugural NASCAR Sprint Cup stock car race went on sale for the first time.
“The phones never quit ringing all day,” said Kentucky Speedway’s director of communications Tim Bray. He did not have exact sales figures for the day. “It’s my understanding that we had more hits on the track website in that first hour than we did for all hours of operation on Monday combined, but the site never crashed.”
Tickets for the 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup race on July 9 are available in six price levels ($70, 75, 85, 95, 105 and 110) and can still be purchased either at the track or online at www.kentuckyspeedway.com.
A check for tickets on the website at 8 p.m. Wednesday showed single-seat tickets in each price range still available.
Bray said a pair of race fans from Hamilton — Roy A. Alfrey and Dennis Helton — were the first two ticket buyers.
“One of them told me that they left Hamilton at 5 in the morning and were here before sunrise at 6 a.m. And we didn’t begin selling tickets until 9 this morning,” Bray said.
Attempts to contact the two Hamiltonians were unsuccessful.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup race, which is expected to feature such stars as five-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kyle and Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Ohio’s Sam Hornish Jr. and many other series regulars, has been a Speedway vision since the track’s inception in 2000.
“I’ve been involved in auto racing for the past 11 years, and we’ve had the NASCAR Truck Series and Nationwide Series here during that time, but I’ve never fully experienced the power of the NASCAR Cup Series, and it’s finally here,” Bray said.
The July race weekend begins with a 225-mile Truck Series event on July 7 and a 300-mile Nationwide Series event on July 8. Those individual tickets can be purchased separately. Bray said season ticket packages, which would include a ticket for all the races plus the option of renewing that seat the following year, are also still available.
