Winner of bartender competition says crowd is secret ingredient

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Put together one ounce of liquor, a splash of soda, throw in a mixer, then top it off with some crowd interaction, and you have what T.G.I. Friday’s staff would call a recipe for an energy-packed bartender competition.

Eric Redwine, a West Chester Twp. native, used his seven years of bartending experience to win T.G.I. Friday’s Tylersville bartending competition Thursday, July 22.

“You’ve got to get the crowd on your side, then it’s pretty much yours,” he said.

Redwine competed with seven other bartenders, all employees at the West Chester Twp. location of the chain restaurant, 7656 Cox Lane, to become the restaurant’s best skilled and knowledgeable bartender. Nearly 200 people attended Thursday’s competition, in which bartenders performed a five-minute synchronized routine using liquor bottles, mixers and other bartending tools.

Each competitor took a written test earlier this week, where they were questioned on food and drink recipes, said General Manager Doug Getz.

T.G.I. Friday’s was also using the event to raise funds for St. Rita’s School for the Deaf, with a donation goal of $1,000. Only $272 was raised, but Getz said he was happy to contribute anything.

Redwine will now compete with winners from 10 other T.G.I. Friday’s in Cincinnati and Dayton area in the regional competition, September 23, also at the Tylersville location.

“I’m going to have to practice for this one, but we’ve got home field advantage,” Redwine said.
