Reuse, recycle facility making big difference to area nonprofits

Art items and school supplies are especially needed.

The Montgomery County Material Reuse Facility is a great example of what can be accomplished when it comes to reusing and recycling locally. Several area nonprofits benefit from the services it provides.

The organization collects all sorts of unwanted, yet still usable materials from businesses and individuals, then redistributes them to local nonprofit organizations. Lorelei Hagans, community program specialist for Montgomery County Solid Waste District, says nonprofit 501C3 groups such as schools and religious institutions can benefit from the donations.

“It’s extremely important that we receive art and school supplies for the upcoming school year,” Hagans says. On McMRF Teacher Shopping Day, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, Montgomery County teachers can shop free for basic school supplies, as well as materials such as beads and blocks that can be used to teach basic math skills.

Here are some of materials that the organization collects and warehouses:

• Office supplies and furniture

• School supplies

• Arts and crafts items

• Fabric

• Carpet

• Paint

• Tools

• Home fixtures

Items can be dropped off at the Montgomery County Material Use Facility, 2450 Sandridge Road in Moraine from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The facility is off Interstate 75, at Ohio 741 and Sandridge Road.

Normal shopping days for the nonprofits are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Fridays.
