Shoppers can save big on high-quality merchandise at outlet malls, local experts say.
Deep discounts are offered at outlet stores because items are sold directly to the consumer, thus avoiding the department store markup, said Quentin N. Pell, director of public relations and communications at North Carolina-based Tanger Outlet Centers, Inc., which has a location in Jeffersonville.
Brands have started creating merchandise exclusively for outlets, too, he said.
“Today, you can walk into almost any store at a Tanger Outlet Center and buy the latest current-season goods, because brands are increasingly creating new, in-season product to sell at our centers,” Pell said.
Shopping at Cincinnati Premium Outlets in Monroe also is a smart way to get quality designer and name-brand merchandise at a low price, said Mary Ann Mattscheck, assistant general manager of Cincinnati Premium Outlets.
“Our 100-store center offers an incredible collection of some of the most popular designer labels and brands at savings of 25 percent to 65 percent every day,” she said.
We asked Pell and Mattscheck to give you their insider tips for finding the best deals and making the most out of your outlet mall shopping experience this summer.
Pell’s tips
1. “New merchandise comes in on Tuesday and Thursday.”
2. “Weekends are very busy, especially in the warmer weather, so shop during the week if you can.”
3. “Clearance items are always located in the back of the store, so that’s where you can find the best deals.”
4. “Always pick up a coupon book.”
5. “Check to see if your outlet center has a mobile app that will give you exclusive deals. Tanger Outlets’ app uses geo-targeting and will send you deal alerts [and] coupons when you walk past certain stores.”
Mattscheck’s tips
1. “Sign up for the VIP Shopper Club for free at www.premium outlets.com/vip to gain access to special offers posted online in the VIP Lounge.
You can print exclusive offers from your favorite brands. Plus, you can download a voucher for a free VIP Coupon Book.”
2. “Know before you go. Check the website frequently at www.premium outlets.com/cincinnati for announcements of new stores, upcoming sales, special events, store hours, general info and more.”
3. “If you can’t shop during the week, arrive early in the day or shop later in the day. Between 10 a.m. and noon and 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. are great weekend times to shop and not have to wait to get a dressing room or check out.”
4. “Buy what you love now. Don’t wait; it may be gone tomorrow.”
5. “Know your prices. An educated shopper gets the best deals. What represents good value differs from person to person.”
