Drew Brads’ hands are quick, but his mind is faster.

The 13-year-old Xenia resident recently put both up against Rubik’s Cube players from all around the world. He ended up on the champion’s stand.

Brads won first place on the Pyraminx (that’s the one that looks like a pyramid), in the World’s Cube Association’s World Rubik’s Cube Championship 2013 in Las Vegas last month.

Nearly 600 competitors from 37 countries took part.

Brads represented the Buckeye State well. His best time was 2.61 seconds in the Pyraminx competition. His recording breaking average speed solving the puzzle was 3.16 seconds.

Brads also fared well in other competitions, including solving the 3x3 Rubik’s Cube, the one most people are familiar with from the 1980s, with an average speed of 9.08 seconds.

Consider this, Rubik’s Cube speeds demon Feliks Zemdegs of Australia bested Brads and the rest of the field, solving the classic 3x3 Rubik’s Cube with an 8.18 second average. The Australian also won the 4x4 and 3x3 one-handed.

Brads is a home-schooled student who takes some classes at Xenia Christian.

He has been solving puzzles for three-and-half years and has about 30 cubes in his collection. His largest is an 8X8.

He credits his speed to watching Youtube videos and tips from other players.

He said there is a supportive community of players out there.

“I really like the challenge of learning new ways to solve it,” he said. “I like to figure out how the pieces move.”

Brads aspires to be an engineer.

“It helped some of my logic skill and my reaction time,” he said of cubing.

The game is not as hard as it looks, he said, urging people not to give in to the temptation of peeling off stickers or take the pieces apart in frustration like so many of us have done.

“If you ‘actually’ try to figure it our you can do it,” he promised.
