The explosion took place at the IGS CNG Services compressed natural gas fueling station at Cardington Road and Ohio 741/North Springboro Pike around 11 a.m.
A Rumpke worker filled propane tanks and was getting back into the truck’s cab when explosion happened, said Moraine Fire Department Fire Marshal Doug Hatcher.
The compressed natural gas fuel tanks ruptured, a spokesperson from Rumpke said.
No injuries were reported.
“This is an unprecedented event, we are grateful no one was injured and we appreciate the swift support and assistance we received from local first responders and investigators,” said Rumpke Safety Supervisor Scott Barnhizer. “Safety is the chief priority at Rumpke. We are committed to working with the fueling system engineer and manufacturers to determine the next best steps.”
Rumpke is working with investigators to determine the cause.
Cardington Road is closed between Ohio 741 and Encrete Lane. Ohio 741 has reopened to traffic.
Hatcher said fortunately the explosion went out of the back of the truck, which was pointed away from traffic.
It didn’t appear the IGS CNG station had any damage, but the fuel pumps will need to be checked, he added.
It’s not clear what caused the explosion. Rumpke will inspect the truck at one of their facilities, Hatcher said.
The explosion remains under investigation.
