Dog food sold in Dayton recalled for metal fragments

Mars Petcare, the maker of Pedigree dog food, has issued a product-safety recall of 55-pound bags sold in Dayton-area Sam’s Club locations because the food may contain metal fragments, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced this morning.

The voluntary recall affects 55-pound bags labeled “PEDIGREE Adult Complete Nutrition” dry dog food that have the lot code “432E1KKM03” printed on the back of the bag near the UPC label, and a “Best Before” date of 8/7/15. Pedigree’s maker said the 55-pound bags were sold at select Sam’s Club locations in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Sam’s Club locations in three Ohio cities are listed in the recall: Dayton, Lima and Holland. There are five Dayton-area Sam’s Club locations.

“Bags may contain small metal fragments, which could have entered the packages during the production process,” Mars Petcare officials said in the released distributed by the FDA. “The foreign material is not embedded in the food itself, but may present a risk of injury if consumed.” There have been no reports of injuries to pets.

Company officials said no other types of Pedigree dog food, dog treats, packages or retailers are affected by the recall, and they encouraged consumers who have purchased the recalled dog food to discard the food or return it to the retailer for a full refund or exchange.
