Butler County Donut Trail offers new attraction

If you're one of the more than 4,000 pastry-lovers who have completed the Butler County Donut Trail since its launch in January, there's a new reason to retrace your steps.

The Butler County Visitors Bureau teamed up with Geocaching.com to create a 12-stop “GeoTour” featuring doughnut shops around the county.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game that uses GPS-enabled devices, like a cellphone. Players are challenged to navigate to specific coordinates in an attempt to find a hidden container, called a geocache.

The GeoTour version of the Butler County Donut Trail features an official GeoTour passport that must be filled out with the official code word from each stop. Once all 12 caches and code words have been found, players will be rewarded with a commemorative Donut Trail GeoCoin.

“The award-winning Butler County Donut Trail has proven to be incredibly effective at bringing new visitors to Butler County,” said Mark Hecquet, executive director of the Butler County Visitors Bureau. “The Donut Trail GeoTour is a great extension of the concept and will highlight Butler County to a new audience.”

The Donut Trail GeoTour is not the same as the Butler County Donut Trail, which rewards pilgrims to all nine stops with an exclusive T-shirt.

The popular Butler County Donut Trail, created by the Butler County Visitors Bureau, recently earned the organization an award at a national conference.
