The district attorney for Santa Clara County in California announced this afternoon that he, along with several lawmakers in that state, are working to propose new legislation that would broaden the state’s definition of rape.

The announcement comes after Oakwood native Brock Turner was convicted of sexual assault.

“[The] 12-page letter written to a judge and addressed to her attacker, started a revolution,” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rose said. “We are hoping to change hearts, to change minds and to change the law to protect the next Emily Doe against the next Brock Turner.”

The proposed legislation would change the law, so that those convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated and/or unconscious person would be ineligible for parole, according to KPIX CBS in San Francisco.

“We are hopeful that this law will be passed,” Rose said.

Rose announced that hearings on the new legislation are scheduled for next week.
