Clark County inmate indicted in connection with attempted jail escape

A grand jury has indicted a 30-year-old Springfield woman on a charge of felony escape.

Stacy Rife was seen on surveillance video on May 25 climbing the fence that surrounds the modular units that house female inmates below the jail, Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said.

She then either fell or jumped to the ground and injured her ankles.

New security features were recently added to the jail after an inmate was able to escape over the top of the fence a few years ago, Clark County Commissioner John Detrick said. The 20-foot fence is topped with barbed wire and covered with tarps.

Rife allegedly told other inmates about her plan, Kelly said.

“All the other inmates knew that it was an escape attempt,” he said.

The safety updates prevented Rife from getting over the top of the fence, he said.
