Work to locate and repair a gas leak stretched into Tuesday morning as a Vectren crew continued to search for the leak.

The building in the 400 block of North Main Street that houses the motor vehicles bureau, two automotive garages, two apartments and a Realtor’s business had to be evacuated Monday afternoon on the report of the leak.

Someone from the motor vehicles bureau called 9-1-1 to report the leak, New Carlisle Fire Chief Steve Trusty said.

North Main Street (state Route 235) was closed in both directions by New Carlisle fire crews and Vectren officials for a time.

Residents of the two apartments above the motor vehicles bureau were allowed to return to their apartments because their heat sources are electric, Chief Trusty said.
