Dayton man arrested in drag racing accident

FRANKLIN, Warren County — A Dayton man was arrested after a three-car accident Friday, April 30, that was reportedly caused by drag racing and closed Interstate 75 southbound.

Lamar Bonner, 28, of Dayton was arrested for OVI (operating a vehicle under the influence) and failure to control, said Trooper Brandon Williams of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lebanon post.

A second man was arrested at the scene for an outstanding warrant from Montgomery County, Williams said.

“We have witnesses who said there were two vehicles traveling at extremely high rates of speed, one of which is the one that crashed,” Williams said.

According to witnesses, Bonner’s white Buick was traveling with a black Oldsmobile at speeds “possibly excess of 100 miles-per-hour,” Williams said. Drag racing reports are “unconfirmed,” he said.

The crash occurred at 7:35 p.m. on I-75 southbound near mile marker 39. There were no injuries.

The other vehicles involved in the crash were a Chevy Silverado and a Chevy pickup truck that was hauling a trailer. Both were operated by drivers from Michigan. The black Oldsmobile “was not factored into the crash cars,” Williams said.

The Oldsmobile stopped briefly, left an occupant at the scene and then fled before troopers arrived.

That occupant left at the scene was identified, “a warrant was received from Montgomery County and he was arrested,” Williams said. The man’s name was not available.

All lanes of I-75 southbound were closed for about one hour.

The accident is still under investigation. Additional charges are possible, Williams said.
