Dayton man, 19 indicted for murder in shooting death of 70-year-old man

A 19-year-old is facing murder charges in the shooting death of a 70-year-old man.

Markell Simpson is accused of fatally shooting Robert Lawrence in the head the morning of July 15 at his home in the 3700 block of Lakebend Drive in Dayton.

He was indicted Monday on two counts of murder and two counts of felonious assault, all with three-year gun specifications, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report.

Simpson’s mother called 911 when she returned home and found Lawrence deceased.

“I just left work. He called me and said ‘come home,’” the woman told dispatchers. “And he said he shot someone, my roommate.”

Simpson’s mother told police she took a 9mm handgun from her son, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Simpson remains held on $1 million bond in the Montgomery County Jail, where he’s been held since his July 15 arrest. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
