Police look to question second 18-year-old in Dunbar student’s death

An 18-year-old is charged in the shooting death of a Dunbar student-athlete, the same day police announced they are seeking another 18-year-old in the death of Qua’Lek Shelton.

Qua’lek and a 16-year-old boy were hit Feb. 16 during a drive-by shooting in the 2400 block of Catalpa Drive in Dayton. Qua’lek died a few days later. The 16-year-old was last reported in “good” condition.

Dayton police announced they are seeking Malakhy McCain for questioning in connection to the shootings. Anyone with information about McCain’s whereabouts is urged to call police at 937-333-COPS (2677) or Crime Stoppers at 937-222-STOP (7867).

Jackeem Alexander Collins, 18, of Mason, is facing two counts of murder, eight counts of felonious assault and a weapons charge, according to a charges filed Friday in Dayton Municipal Court.

Meanwhile, the coach of the Dayton’s Wolverine track club, who Qua’lek ran with for several years, said his team is coming together to support each other and Qua’lek’s family.

“It’s like a family,” Keith Ways said. “We are just trying to comfort and be there for the Shelton family. He was part of our family and we need to be there for his family.”

He said the Shelton family is “holding up as well as you can expect.”
