DUI driver who killed Austin Rife sentenced

The Pennsylvania drunk driver who killed a Kettering teenager last summer while he and his family were fishing has been sentenced in an Alford plea deal. In such a plea, the defendant does not admit guilt, but agrees there is sufficient evidence for conviction at a trial.

On August 8, 2013, Brittany Raskowski, 25, had a blood alcohol level of .212, when the truck she was driving veered off the road, crashed through two fences, then traveled nearly 250 feet through a pasture, finally stricking three people standing by a small pond. One victim, Austin Rife, was killed. Rife’s mother, 38 year-old Stephani Rife, and 36 year-old Aimee Dibbs, both from Kettering, were injured.

It was nearly midnight when the accident happened. The family was fishing at the time of the crash.

Raskowski pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault while driving under the influence, and reckless endangerment. In exchange, 17 additional charges were dropped. Raskowski was sentenced Friday to five to 16 years in prison in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
