Eaton man sentenced in ‘13 shooting death

An Eaton man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in a 2013 shooting death.

Tyler Smith was sentenced March 15 to a term of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years in the shooting death of Jerry Mason on May 17, 2013.

Smith shot Mason, his mother’s boyfriend, with Mason’s own shotgun while Mason slept on a couch.

Mason died instantly, and then Smith called 911.

Smith was later indicted in June 2013 for aggravated murder, an unclassified felony.

After nearly three years of preliminary psychological evaluations and pretrial motions, Smith entered a plea of guilty as charged, according to Preble County Prosecutor Attorney Martin Vogel.

“This murder was cold and it was calculated. The defendant himself admitted that he had been considering killing Jerry Mason for several weeks before the crime and that he had even contemplated the different methods he might use to kill Mr. Mason,” Vogel said in a release.
