Father dead, child injured in ambush shooting

DAYTON —Corey Mitchell, a 34-year-old Dayton man, has died as a result of a shooting Saturday night, May 29.

Mitchell and his 11-year-old daughter emerged from their car about 9 p.m. and were ambushed by a masked gunman hiding in weeds at the corner of First and Paul Laurence Dunbar Streets.

Witnesses told Dayton police that the victim was shot as he ran across First Street. The gunman fired three more bullets while his daughter watched before fleeing.

According to Dayton Police Lt. Robert Mannix, who led the investigation at the scene, the victim’s daughter was wounded in the knee.

“I’m pretty sure it’s drug related,” Mannix said.

Mannix said the victim appeared to be headed toward a home at 131 N. Paul Laurence Dunbar Street. Mannix said the victim refused to answer questions after the shooting and was later pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital. According to Mannix, the victim had been shot at the same location two weeks earlier.
