Former Oakwood officer indicted

A former Oakwood police officer has been indicted for embezzling nearly $100,000 from the Oakwood Fraternal Order of Police lodge.

Frederick R. Wilson, 47, of Centerville, had been an Oakwood officer from 2000 until his resignation June 9, 2014. Wilson was indicted for grand theft by a Montgomery County Common Pleas Court grand jury. The charge is a fourth-degree felony for which Wilson is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 4.

A statement from Oakwood Director of Public Safety and police Chief Alex Bebris read, in part: “Preliminary investigation determined that the funds may have been embezzled by the lodge treasurer, who was also an employee of the Safety Department. The missing funds were entirely the property of FOP Lodge No. 107; there were no city funds involved in this matter.”

A Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office press release said that starting in 2009, Wilson served as the treasurer of FOP Lodge No. 107. On June 8, 2014, another officer attempted to use the lodge’s credit card for lodge business and discovered the card had an outstanding balance of $14,000.

The press release said the lodge hired an accounting firm to audit its finances and determined the defendant stole $90,279 from the lodge’s checking and savings accounts, and stole $9,717.53 more through unauthorized expenses on the lodge’s credit card.

“This defendant abused the trust of his fellow FOP members and took advantage of his access to the lodge’s money,” prosecutor Mat H. Heck Jr. said. “All these funds came from FOP member dues and fundraisers.”

Bebris said Wilson was hired March 27, 2000 and resigned the day the Oakwood FOP informed Oakwood police of the missing money. Bebris said the investigation of Wilson was handled by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The grand jury heard the case Monday and the indictment was officially handed up Wednesday afternoon. A review of Wilson’s personnel file did not include any major disciplinary action against him.
