Kettering man gets 21 years in killing of infant

A former Kettering man was sentenced Monday in New York state to 21 years in prison after he admitted guilt in the death of his girlfriend's infant son, according to WWNY CH. 7, a New York CBS affiliate.

Gary McKenzie, 23, a soldier stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y., was convicted of causing the death of 7-month-old Braylin Chambers, the son of Savanna Goble of Dayton and Aaron Hunsbarger, who grew up in West Milton and Dayton.

McKenzie pleaded guilty in May to felony manslaughter. He will also have to serve five years of post-release supervision.

"I wish there was a better word than sorry, but there is nothing more ... Everyone is judging me. I'm not some evil person because I'm not showing emotion," McKenzie told the court, according to WWNY reports.

Hunsbarger told the court his son's "name and memory still brings smiles, but now coupled with a very deep pain and sorrow."

McKenzie was baby-sitting Braylin in July 2013 when he became frustrated by the child's crying and threw the infant onto a baby swing that propelled him into a wall face first.

The infant died from massive brain injuries after being taken off life support in a Syracuse hospital the following day.
