Man arrested for OVI said he was being responsible by driving slower

A Cincinnati man didn’t think he did anything wrong after being charged with operating a vehicle while impaired, according to police.

A police officer pulled Alexander James Burge, 24, over on Grand Teton Court at 7:20 p.m. on Monday, May 21. The officer walked up to the driver’s side window and smelled a strong smell of alcohol and saw a Mike’s Hard Mango pint in the vehicle’s cup holder.

Burge told the officer he was driving through the neighborhood looking for a friend’s house to play basketball.

When asked how much he had drank, Burge told the officer he had “nothing over six drinks,” according to the police report and then proceeded to hold up the pint of Mike’s Hard Mango.

Burge failed field sobriety tests and registered a 0.19 on a breath test, according to a police report.

The officer wrote in his report that Burge “was very polite and admitted multiple times that he was intoxicated, and also admitted to smoking marijuana.”

“Alexander still does not believe that he did anything wrong and believes that he was being responsible,” according to the police report. “He said multiple times that even though he was intoxicated he took roads with slower speed limits so he could be more cautious when driving.”

Burge has had two previous OVI convictions since 2016, according to police.

He was charged with OVI and violating the open container law.
