Man shot by Celina police officer has died

A shirtless man in possession of a gun who was shot by a Celina police officer Wednesday has died.

The deceased was identified as Robert Hensley, 39, 1107 Mott St., St. Mary’s, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Patrolman Andy Regedanz, 33, a 12-year veteran officer, was not injured, according to the sheriff’s office, which is handling the investigation at the request of Celina police.

At about 1 p.m., police received reports of a man in the parking lot of an auto dealership in the 700 block of East Market Street.

The man was described as shirtless, wearing a cowboy hat, shorts and sandals with a gun tucked in his pants, according to the sheriff’s office.

The caller stated that the suspect took the gun out, waved it around, but did not point it at anybody.

The officer dispatched on the call located the suspect and made contact with him in the parking lot of Lake Shore Motor Sales.

Shots were fired and the suspect was hit, according to the sheriff’s office. The officer immediately called for EMS and the suspect was taken to Mercer Health, where he died.

No details have been released about the number of shots fired.

“Nothing else will be released as the integrity of the investigation needs to be preserved,” Sheriff Grey said late Wednesday afternoon. “As soon as the investigation is completed, results will be released.”
