The U.S. Marshals Service is spreading the word about a telephone scam in which the caller claims to be a local U.S. Marshal and demands payment of fines if you want to avoid being arrested.

Dayton area residents received fraudulent calls Thursday and Friday from the phone number — 937-964-2422 — and the caller claims to be U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott with the Northern District of Ohio, the U.S. Marshals Service announced today.

The U.S. Marshals Service advises people to report any such calls immediately to the local authorities, the FBI or the nearest U.S. Marshals Service, according to the release.

“the U.S. Marshals Service is a federal law enforcement agency and does not seek payment of fines or fees via the telephone and will never ask someone to go to a local store to get a prepaid credit card,” the release states.

If you have received such a call and want to report it, call the U.S. Marshals Service in Dayton at (937) 225-2917.
