NEW DETAILS: Police say illegal trash dumping led to Dayton shootout

Two men jailed in connection to a Monday night shooting are accused of firing guns at a resident who tried to stop them from illegally dumping trash, police said.

Dayton police said in a statement that the incident began when a resident of Hickorydale Drive confronted the individuals because he believed they were illegally dumping trash near the apartment complex. The man said he told them he was going to call the police.

“The (resident) says the two subjects fired several shots at him,” police said in a statement. “He then fired several rounds at the suspects while retreating.”

The resident was struck by gunfire, the statement says, but the injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.

A police report says Dwayne Smith, 52, and Jeffery Shehee, 60, were arrested following an incident on Hickorydale Drive. They were booked into jail on complaints of felonious assault, but no formal charges have been filed in the case as of Tuesday morning.
