Patient cuffed after assaulting hospital staff

A patient at Miami Valley Hospital was taken to jail after he nearly broke a staff member's thumb.

Christopher Jervis, 41, was transferred from the hospital to Montgomery County Jail following the incident Friday night.

At 7:49 p.m., officers were called to the hospital on reports that a staff member had been assaulted by a patient.

Jervis was "highly intoxicated" when officers reached him, according to a Dayton Police Department report.

Jervis apparently got violent with nurses while they took his vitals, swinging and spitting at them. When a 60-year-old hospital police officer tried to intervene, Jervis grabbed the man's hand and bent his thumb backwards until a ligament was torn.

Several nurses witnessed the attack, according to police.

He faces a possible misdemeanor assault charge and has a $2,500 bail.
