Piqua police investigating nude photos of local girls

Police in Piqua are investigating who posted nude photos of local girls on a website and are working to offer education on sexting and other online risks.

Police Chief Bruce Jamison said Thursday a young person alerted him to a web site link being passed around by Piqua students mostly through text messages. “It started on a local level, then went viral,” he said.

Police know of nude images of five girls who are juveniles or were juveniles when the photos were taken, Jamison said.

“They were mostly taken by the girls themselves or someone they trusted, but they are out there,” he said of the images. Among the images were ones from a 2011 case police handled of a girl who sent a photo to a boyfriend.

As word of the photos circulated, names were attached to some photos, which added to the embarrassment and other issues for those involved, Jamison said.

The photos have been removed from the website by an operator he said was outside the country. “We are looking at who might have posted them originally,” Jamison said.

Police offered an education program on NetSmartz at the city hall Wednesday. Few people attended but Jamison said the goal is to get the information out in order to protect the community’s young people. He recommended people visit the NetSmartz web site.

“A couple of families were quite surprised to find their child had done something a couple of years ago,” Jamison said of the photos.

“This is not an isolated problem. Parents should open the lines of communications with their kids,” Jamison said.
