Kettering police Lt. Craig Moore said the incident started at 5:47 p.m. during a Dayton police investigation into a vehicle Lawson allegedly stole from a Dayton car lot. The missing car was found parked outside the Midvale Street home. Lawson, who would not come out for Dayton officers, called Kettering police.
"We responded. Upon our arrival a gun was displayed; the subject refused to come out," Moore said.
SWAT officers shot cans of pepper spray and tear gas into his residence, but they said Lawson still would not leave the house. He also did not answer hundreds of calls from Kettering's crisis team, according to police. They also used sirens and a bull horn to try to get his attention.
Dayton police SWAT officers responded to assist, and they also saw Lawson inside and a rifle, according to Kettering police.
Lawson finally surrendered around 2:30 a.m. He came out of his house holding a flashlight. Once police determined the flashlight was not a weapon, they took him into custody.
He is being held in Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of obstructing official business. An inducing panic charge is pending, jail records show. Dayton police could pursue felony charges against him, police said.
Midvale Street was blocked at Talisman Drive and Aragon Avenue. Neighbors were not ordered to evacuate during the incident. Many neighbors remained outside, watching the events of the standoff.
