Dayton police investigate a death on South Hedges Street.

A murder suspect who died by suicide as officers were closing in on him Tuesday confessed to the crime in a note, police said Wednesday.

Erik Evans, 32, of Dayton, admitted to another crime in the same note, which police found in his shirt pocket after his death.

“Mr. Evans did have a note on him at the time of his death that indicated he had in fact killed our victim, and alluded to the fact that he may have tried to kill another person, but stated that person got away,” said Lt. Jason Hall of the Dayton Police Department.

Evans did not include the name of the second person in the note, but police is asking that the individual come forward and speak with investigators, Hall said. Anyone who has information about that person is asked to contact Dayton police.

Evans is the suspect in the death of Cora Rose Grubb, 26, of Kettering. Her body was found Monday inside a South Hedges Street home where Evans lived, Hall said.

Police originally were called on reports of an odor coming from the house.

Police are still working to learn why Grubb was at Evans’ home and how they were acquainted.

Officers received information late Monday morning that some bodies could be inside the house, Hall said.

Homicide detectives forced their way into the home after getting a search warrant before finding Grubb’s body.

It is not clear when she died nor how long she had been inside.

However, Hall said there was a “very strong smell of decomposition” when detectives entered the house, and that Grubb’s death was “not a recent event.”

Grubb had not been reported missing.

Evidence at the scene indicated a possible dismemberment, but police later learned that was not the case, Hall said.
